Organising your inbox once is all well and good, but keeping it organised long-term is what will really save you time.

The secret to keeping your inbox organised long-term is by creating simple habits that make it easy and automatic for you to deal with your emails.

5 Easy Ways to Keep Your Emails organised Long Term

1. Unsubscribe from New Junk Immediately

Don't just delete it. Unsubscribe as soon as you see a newsletter you never read.

Why?

Anything you push off to the "I'll do that later" is something you'll probably never get to. Especially something as seemingly unimportant as unsubscribing from newsletters.

2. Create One Folder for "Action Needed" Emails

Organise your emails that need a response or that create a task for you to do into their own folder.

Why?

This will give you a clear idea of what actually needs your attention and what doesn't.

3. Set a Weekly Email Tidy-Up Reminder

You use a calendar, right? So block out some time on the same day each week to deal with your emails.

Why?

If you can't manage to deal with your emails every day, setting aside one day a week to take care of it will stop emails from piling up.

4. Use Email Rules or Filters

Set up filters to automatically send newsletters, receipts, or social media notifications to their own folders.

Why?

Automation is great! It saves you time, moves things you do not need to see out of the way as soon as they come in, and keeps everything neatly organised when you get to your inbox. For the most part.

If you aren't sure how to set up filters, I have a handy guide here on how to manage your emails more efficiently.

5. Delete or Archive Old E-mail Threads Once a Month

Create an archive folder to organise emails for projects you are finished with, and delete emails that aren't important or needed.

Why?

Filing them away into an archive folder means you can still go back to the emails if you need them, but your inbox will only have relevant emails to current projects.
